		<description>Project:

How much can we take of it?

Geospatial data points crisscrossing emotional and relational
content; micro histories that elevate the domestic to the public domain;
archiving as healing; memory as resistance; collecting + amplifying texts,
sounds, feelings; unexpected bursts of the ephemeral solidifying in permanent
records; memory as resistance: archives as blunt tools for soft caresses.

In
our How

much

can we take of it? project we look at microhistories of
the intimate and the domestic, as seen through everyday devices (such as
photography, souvenirs, sounds, objects, etc.), as potential entries for
archive making.

In
past projects of ours (Sprouting Stories, Beirut, 2024; Transient
Flows, Taiwan, 2019; Ways of solitude, Manila, 2018; and Ghost walker,
Mexico City, 2016) we have experimented with different techniques and aesthetic
approaches to propose and build experimental archives that resonate from the
intimate to the collective.
Project phase: Currently we are ready to develop a methodological template of the project -as a body of different works-, that could be released and replicated by arts practicioners or institutions. We are specially interested in developing, during our residency, a sort of pedagogical roadmap towards a synthesis of the different techniques we have been aplying in past projects.

Past projects:&#38;nbsp; Transient flows (publication)&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; Ghost Walker&#38;nbsp; (publication)&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

2024

During their month-long summer residency at TAKEOVER, in collaboration with a community of people from Beirut, Lebanon, Modelab transformed the
gallery into a mixed media genealogical garden. The installation,
made out of images, plant samples, and decorative elements, proposes&#38;nbsp; the elevation of personal histories into a collective aesthetic process.
 Through experimental archival techniques, Modelab
acknowledges family memories and identities as a celebration of present
life.
Sprouting Stories is a reminder that all thing originate from nature, that memories ultimately return to it, and that some memory exercises are acts of resistance— asserting life in the face of adversity.
Family genealogies
rooted in the past extend into the future:

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Memory is resistance. Resistance is hope. Hope is change.

Littoral AnimalVanessa Rivero
Chicxulub, Yucatán, MéxicoSeptember 18, 2022

DOWNLOAD PUBLICATIONFor over a decade, Mexican artist Vanessa Rivero has combined various media, including&#38;nbsp; drawing, sculpture and installation, to study the ways in which we perceive and relate to nature. “Littoral Animal” is a journey of Rivero’s sculptural objects through the beaches, swamps, and mangroves of the Yucatan coast. It draws attention to the interconnectivity of species through water, a material that makes up our bodies and everything that surrounds us.During several hot mornings, we explored various spots of the littoral, first accompanied by a brown metallic mammalian-shaped sculpture that was already in Rivero’s studio. Later, a pink metal flamingo and an orange crab joined the excursions; as well as a variety of yarn-made algae and a series of blue fibreboard chromosomes. These entities were specially created by the artist for this project.“Littoral Animal” draws on the importance of thinking ourselves as water beings, interdependent of other watery bodies. It also emphasizes the need of a liquid flow as a conceptual framework that leads us to critically reflect on the global ecological crisis, which currently makes us live in a state of permanent uncertainty.

excursiones un flamenco rosa y un cangrejo naranja, también delineados en metal;

September 6–7, 2019

Le
Chemin Composé is a site-specific project that explores the
Marais as the arena for medieval scientific exploration, in which
freedom of thought led to an expanded worldview framed by natural and spiritual
forces.

Medieval scientists saw the world
as a confluence of the visible and the invisible. It was through chemical and
intellectual exploration that they rendered understandable an otherwise
irrational and mysterious world. The quest for the true nature of
spirits, divine essences, planetary influences, and mineral and vegetal secrets
fueled early scientific explorations. Through this process, the clerical monopoly
of knowledge was challenged by amateur scientists, travellers, chemists,
heretics, and philosophers.
Specially created for the Traversées du Marais Festival, the exhibition includes drawings, installations, and video works that muse on the different symbols, materials, processes, and secrets that alchemists thought to be contained in every living being and in the universe.

All works on display are the result of exploratory trips through the streets of the iconic 4th arrondissement. The project involved collaborations with artists Judith Neunhäeuserer and Tania Hernández.

Transient Flows
Frontier Plaza
Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taipei
June&#38;nbsp;1–23,&#38;nbsp; 2019

Like river waters that flow from the past and present into the future, so does the way we write history. The Xindian River flows through the very heart of Taipei: it is its living memory and pulsating present. For this project, Modelab invited people from Taipei to create a collective new map of an old river based on thoughts, affections, memories, and aspirations. This affective cartography charters subjective and objective links between places, imagination, and the hectic life of an endless river.

Ways of Solitude

Manila Biennale, PhilippinesFebruary 21–25, 2018

This place-specific project explores the role that solitude has played in the history of Manila. Among the multiple layers that history is made of, solitude is one of the most overlooked but nonetheless significant. It is usually described as a personal choice, but it can also be fostered by external circumstances such as exile or war. It is a physical and psychological experience that extends from the individual to an entire nation.

Solitude played a key role in the history of one of the oldest neighborhoods of Manila: Ermita. The name of this area derives from the legend of a hermit from the New Spain who settled just outside Intramuros in the sixteenth century. This eremite, if it ever existed, was the living image of an early-globalized world connected by maritime trade. The Manila galleon, which linked the ports of Acapulco and Manila, not only brought wealth and new ideas, but also scattered multiple solitudes along faraway shores.

The post-World War II was a period of strong isolation for Manila, which experienced acute solitude exacerbated by destruction. The month-long Battle of Manila devastated the entire city, leaving the streets of Intramuros and Ermita smelling of death and desolation.

Today, solitude is part of the everyday of all Filipino overseas workers. Among all the things they have left behind, the dearest is the companionship of family and friends.

Just as the cyclical decay and bloom of the island-garden of Baluarte de San Diego, in which memory, loss, oblivion and reflection are intertwined, this project meditates on the bricks of solitude in which personal and collective histories in Manila are built every day. This project, commissioned by the Manila Biennale, follows on Modelab's residency at Mabini Projects in 2017.

Participants: Brisa Amir, Arca Ceramics, Dulce Chacón, Jose&#38;nbsp;Mari Cuartero, Tad Ermitaño, Indy Paredes.

November 2017
Multiple locations, Sydney

The narrative of faraway sunsets and white sands strolls, or the ultimate reward for the exhausted modern middle classes, can be also a reminder of the ongoing existence of physical spaces designed to confine, isolate, and punish.

Beachside images of Nauru and Manus are intervened with phrases such as those commonly used in touristic slogans. Through the apparent innocuous sensitiveness of these phrases the images revert its original purpose to evoke the current controversy surrounding Australian refugee camps in the Pacific Islands.

Life in these camps is appalling beyond belief, and even worst is the exploitation of legal loopholes to justify the detention camps. It sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the tenets of international law concerning refugees and asylum seekers.

The phrases are literary extracts from experiences in Soviet corrective settlements&#38;nbsp;(One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich, by Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn), Nazi concentration camps (If this is a man, by Italian writer Primo Levi) and Pol Pot labor prisons (testimony by Cambodian writer Vann Nath, included in&#38;nbsp;The Killing Fields&#38;nbsp;collection).

An edition of one thousand postcards were distributed in different public locations in Sydney, Australia.
